IFAH-Europe was delighted to attend its first meeting of the EFSA Stakeholder Consultative Platform at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on 21 22 November last year. It is important that EFSA is regarded as a source of high quality scientific opinion that guides risk assessment.
Our European Pet Night held in February featured the fantastic work of Activ’dog in bringing pets to visit the elderly. The work of the volunteers deserves every praise and the stories that they told about the joy that pets bring to the elderly as we prepared for the event was moving and clearly of great value to society. Their generosity in giving their time is to be admired and supported.
The animal, plant and control package which includes the proposed Animal Health Law text was well-received in May. At the Copa-Cogeca and DG Sanco conferences, we welcomed the draft text as a means of advancing the Commission’s agenda in terms of the surveillance of antibiotic resistance amongst animals.
The draft Animal Health Law (AHL) is generating quite a lot of interest as first reading commences in the European Parliament. The AHL is correctly described by the rapporteur, Marit Paulsen, in the lead committee (AGRI) as ‘a law on the control of communicable diseases amongst animals’. The draft text brings together almost 50 Directives and 400 pieces of secondary legislation into 1 text – quite a feat!
